It’s a Hemospectrum scarf! I’d never actually knitted anything before, so it got a lot better as I went along. I’m quite proud of it! I want to make another one for myself, although I’ll alter the design as it’d be boring to make the exact same scarf again!

My Christmas present for Teresa! We are prepared. When our time comes, we will move. We will not waste time in stretching out our frozen limbs or blinking into the sudden light of wakefulness. Our mission is to protect. We watch, and when the time comes we will move.

We were charged with our mission upon our creation. We are made of various things, given life by this charge and then left to sleep until our time. When we wake, we will know it is that time.

We know one of our number will betray us. We know that fate cannot be changed. When the Clock begins its motion, it will be because of us, and we will stop it.

We have no names. We borrow the names of our likenesses, saints or kings or gods. We are none of these things. We are alive, yet not alive. We see, but we are blind. We move, but only at the time that is to come.

We are Those Who Watch Over.

30 days of notebook + day three

It was three weeks into their marriage when Scott O’Neill realized no one could see his wife. This was a strange realization, no doubt, and was compounded by the fact that no one could even remember his wedding. They had all been there. It had been a lavish wedding, although his wife had no family to help pay for it.

Scott did not think it was a common thing to doubt the existance of one’s wife. His gentle, soft Lily… of course she existed. He met her in college, both of them business majors with big plans and big dreams. They had married two years after graduation. He had concrete, solid evidence of their time in college, graded papers written in her own hand and photos of the two of them together. He could not be hallucinating those, but when he presented them to his family and friends they only gave him strange looks in return.

He did not tell her any of this, his beautiful Lily. She was busy building up her portfolio in anticipation of searching for a new job, the job she had been hired for out of college having been only a temporary position. She had worked that job, had she not? There was no other explanation for the extra money in his bank account, which he had confirmed was registered under both their names.

Was it all some sort of misguided prank? An ill attempt at a joke? None of his friends would deem such an elaborate setup worth their while.

Her wedding dress, as white as her namesake, hung on the bedroom wall where he could touch it and feel that it was real. All he had to do was have faith that the woman he saw was his wife, that what he perceived was the true reality. As long as he did that, he and his Lily would be happy together.

Even as he acknowledged this, he had one simple doubt, and that was all it took for him to find the kitchen empty and his ring finger bare.

(This one is dumb and bad and terrible, sorry.) (Also late.)

30 days of notebook + day two

“I never want to be saved again.”

She had no idea that the note she’d left behind had blown off her desk in a breeze from the open window she went through. She had no way of knowing it had been missed, had ended up crumpled in a corner where not even the police had noticed it in their investigation.

She never knew this, but does it matter? What would have changed, had the note been found? It was her own private battle she had gone to fight. No one could have helped her, and no one could have saved her. Her intention would have been known, and that is all.

The house had changed hands five times before she returned. By then, she was so changed she did not recognize that the people there were not the same as the people she had left behind. She had forgotten all of their faces, and even forgotten how many there had been. But the new residents were touched by her temerity, and charmed by the stories she tried to tell them to explain where she had gone and what she had done there. They allowed her inside, not realizing that once inside she would be difficult to send away.

Though she had saved herself, she had lost more of herself than she could ever regain in the process. What was not recoverable must be replaced, and she realized this. She stayed for five years before she decided it was time to fill those voids within her.

“I want to be whole again,” her note said, and this time she left through the door, so the note was found. It was found, but not understood.

The house changed hands five more times, but stood empty when she once more returned. This time it welcomed her, its child, and, her journey complete, she stayed.

30 days of notebook + day one

A cold girl, looking out on the world.

Her companion is at her side—an immense creature made only of bone. It is difficult to tell what the creature actually is… perhaps a wolf, but the shape of its skull seems somehow insubstantial and of course it is far too large.

She inhales deeply the cold night air, tasting the breath of the city that stretches out below her. The creature beside her stirs, a clattering of bone against bone that sounds eerily muffled in the stillness.

“They said this city never sleeps,” she says.

The creature’s voice is dry and rasping. It has no clear point of origin. “All cities sleep. It is now time to stop neglecting it slightly. For the next thirty days I will be filling one page, and posting whatever I fill said page with here! Maybe sometimes it will be more than one page… Day one was actually yesterday, but Tumblr updates may run a day behind because I will probably do this right before bed every day.

OMIGOSH IT’S A CONTEST

Hey Chickadee is a small company run by two pals of mine — they make apparel and jewelry designed by a spread of super-talented artists (Jess Fink, Emmy Cicierega, and Miss Monster to name a few).

I’ve now done two designs for them (the matryoshka doll pendant/earring design in the banner, as well as a Musicians of Bremen tee design), and Andrew and Claire were nice enough to give me a $20 gift certificate to give away!

So here’s the rules: Reblog this post (‘liking’ doesn’t count, sorry) and you’ll be entered into the contest. Next Tuesday (August 2nd, a week from today) someone will be randomly chosen to win the gift certificate. I’ll make a crazy blingee with the winner’s username, because I guess that’s what I do now.

Thanks, guys! Have fun!

"The second reason creative people get stuck is that, while they have the idea, executing the idea..."

“The second reason creative people get stuck is that, while they have the idea, executing the idea takes a lot of work, and not all of that work is fun, and basically you don’t want to do the work, because having the idea in the first place was the fun part.”

- J.C.
